What Is Professional Organizing?

You may not be very familiar with professional organizing, so let me shed some light on the mystery.

Professional organizing is a fairly young industry that has been around since the eighties.  It has gained more recognition in the last fifteen years with all of the organizing programs you see on television.

A professional organizer enhances the lives of clients by designing systems and processes using organizing principles and through transferring organizing skills.
Professional organizers help individuals and businesses take control of their surroundings, their time, their paper and their systems for life.

Do You?

  • Spend a great deal of time everyday looking for misplaced items?
  • Have a lack of space for what's important in your home and life?
  • Feel overwhelmed by clutter?
  • Wish you were more organized but don't have the time?

Why Are We Disorganized?

Disorganization is nothing to be embarrassed about.  It can occur for any number of reasons.  A person may not possess organizing skills.  Perhaps it is not something they were ever taught.  An individual may just not enjoy doing what is required to maintain organization.  If you detest housework and can afford to, you hire a cleaning service.  A person may generally be organized but then something called “life” occurs.  Maybe they have become extremely busy or sometimes a more serious, life-altering event takes place such as an illness, birth or death in a family, change of careers or change in residence.

This is where the professional organizer steps in.  Professional organizing is gaining momentum in being recognized as the valuable/ necessary service it is.  I invite all of you to contemplate your environment and to explore the possibility of incorporating more organization into your lifestyle.

Why Become More Organized?

The benefits of becoming organized are numerous.  Your level of stress is reduced.  Having a home and life that run smoothly brings great peace of mind.  You gain time by knowing where all of your belongings are and not having to search for them.  This extra time can be used for yourself, family or career.  You are better able to make it to appointments on time when you are organized.  An organized home is aesthetically pleasing and is a joy to spend time in.  If you are a business person you know that being organized allows you to portray a more professional appearance to your clients.  This instills trust in your services.

Clients have told me becoming more organized is a life altering experience (for the better!).

What Is the Process?

My work is hands on and usually involves the participation of the client.  I provide a complementary initial consultation, which generally takes about half of an hour in the location to be tackled.  If more than one area needs help, we decide which room should be our first priority.  We talk about your organizing challenges, what you want to accomplish in the space, what organizing tools will be needed and try to get a rough estimate of the time involved in the project(s).

The first session begins with clearing the area of its contents.  These items are then sorted (usually into "keep", "store", "donate" and "toss" piles).  The "keep" and "store" items are then broken down into categories.  Once categorized, they are placed in safe & conveniently labeled containers which are placed accessibly back into the room.

I will never insist that you purge an item.  I am here as another set of hands and as a coach to ask questions about and gently remind you of your organizing goals.  As we work, I convey beneficial tips and information pertinent to your particular situation.

 Can You Believe?

Here are some NAPO statistics you may find surprising:

  • 80% of what we keep we never use.
  • We wear 20% of the clothes we own 80% of the time.
  • Americans waste more than 9 million hours each day looking for lost or misplaced items.
